Furniture store donates three free furniture tractor-trailers to tornado victims | News

MAYFIELD, KY – The residents of Mayfield are taking the next steps in tornado recovery. They move into new homes. But these houses require new furniture.

Farmers Home Furniture in Mayfield is helping them by donating three tractor-trailers full of furniture for free.

The giveaway didn’t start until 12.30am on Monday, but Farmers Home staff said people started queuing at 7am.

At 10:30 a.m., more than a hundred people were registered. Farmers Home hopes to help them and many others.

Terri Stotts was one of many people who attended the event on Monday. She lost her house and everything in it on December 10.

She finally got a new place to live, but she didn’t have the money to furnish it. On Farmer’s Home Furniture gave him the missing pieces.

“A bed was given to me through a good friend, and now this chest of drawers and bedside tables – my house is complete,” says Stotts.

Janie Betts, group manager for Kentucky stores, says they just want to give back.

FURNITURE

“We saw a need with the devastation that occurred in December for Mayfield and our company decided to donate as much furniture as possible,” Betts said.

Their goal is to provide furniture for two different areas of the home: living rooms and bedrooms. “So if someone chooses a chest of drawers and there’s a matching nightstand and mirror, they can take that,” Betts says.

But they also have outdoor items to offer. “We have lawn mowers. We have grills. All sorts of things,” Betts says.

The folks at Farmers Home Furniture aren’t the only ones giving back to Mayfield. At the same event, Johnny Ware and the Kentucky Freemasons will spend Monday and Tuesday handing out $21,000 in Walmart gift cards.

RECIPIENTS

“We try to help the community because we’re all one family and we have to do what we do and take care of each other,” Ware says.

Stotts says such support is the reason she is able to carry on.

“This community has really come together and the people who help it are amazing,” says Stotts.

She says the furniture she received means everything to her and her family for their new beginning.

Anyone who has received assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency or the Red Cross is eligible to receive furniture. You also need a driver’s license to register.

The event will continue while supplies last.

If they still have furniture, the giveaway should resume at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
