Blog: How Much Money Do You Make?

Most conversational taboos have fallen by the wayside in modern society, but there remains one subject that is never discussed at cocktail parties, or anywhere else, for that matter: how much money you make. It is never voluntary and never requested, but it is an inexhaustible source of curiosity and speculation.

It is also a valuable tool within an industry to recruit, assess and retain an engaged and productive workforce, which helps businesses stay competitive and thrive.

As far as I know, there is no salary data available for the furniture industry, except for the very few public companies in this sector that are required to report on executive compensation. The rest of us are completely in the dark.

This is why sister publications Accents for the home today and Furniture today conduct the industry’s first-ever salary survey. It will be aimed, in two distinct groups, at retailers and manufacturers of different sizes. It will cover more than a dozen different job titles in various disciplines, from sales and marketing, to product development and merchandising, to public relations and human resources. Salary information will be requested in the form of incremental ranges and will include how people are paid – salaried versus commission, for example – and what the salary increase process is.

Our investigation goes beyond basic numbers. We also want to know what type of benefits you receive and whether you are satisfied with your overall compensation. And since everyone’s work world has been turned upside down by the pandemic, we’d like to know what your work life is like right now and if you’re back in the office, still working from the kitchen table, or you do a combination of both.

The survey is web-based, mobile-friendly and takes approximately five minutes to complete. It’s sent by email, so keep an eye on your inbox. Or, you can access the retail survey link here and the manufacturer link here. Rest assured that your answers are anonymous and will only be used together with those of other respondents.

We would really appreciate your input, as the more responses we receive, the more complete and detailed picture we can provide of what it is really like to work in the furniture industry. Accents for the home today and Furniture today want to be the go-to source for this kind of in-depth, behind-the-scenes information. This could potentially serve not only as a reference for future reports, but also as a guide for anyone looking for a new job or for companies looking to hire.

The results of the survey will be published in July and, for my part, I am not only curious but impatient to see the result. I’m sure you will be too!
